On a local level, Whirlpool works with community organizations to support affordable housing, education and economic development. In 2002, Whirlpool Latin America launched Instituto Consulado da Mulher, a social program that teaches entrepreneurial skills and provides opportunities to women in Brazil. In South Africa, Whirlpool Corp.’s Isithebe Factory developed a program around HIV/AIDS awareness and constructed an on-site health center and clinic. Endeavors like these speak to the Upton brothers’ original spirit of community activism—which now spans the globe.
